How To Conquer Your Fear Of Speaking
The most common problem that most speakers encounter is the fear of speaking. When faced with an audience, fear and uneasiness sets in. The fear of not delivering an efficient and easy to understand speech is what needs to be addressed. The speaker must be able to conquer his or her fear of speaking in order for the audience to understand what he or she will be relaying to them.
First, as a speaker, you need to be prepared. Practice is the key, preferably practice giving out your speech in a loud manner. The better you know the topic or subject matter that you will be discussing, the more preferable. Practice with a small audience, like with your friends and family members. You can even record your practice in a cam recorder in order to be able to listen to your speech yourself. You will be able to pinpoint your strength and weaknesses if you do. You will feel less stressed once you have practiced enough.
Second, be realistic in what would be the worst thing that may happen to you when you deliver your speech. You are not going to lose your life when you give out your speech. Things may not go as well as you may have wanted to, but your audience will surely understand since most people are afraid of public speaking. Understand your nervousness. Once you do, then you will be able to deal with it more easily.
Third is to dress appropriately. Wear the right clothes that will fit you in with your audience. This will give them the right message. If you are going to deliver a speech in a formal gathering, then wear formal clothes. If you are going to deliver your speech in front of graduating students, then wear clothes that will get along with them.
Fourth, do not forget to breathe. Breathing will lessen the tension and nervousness that you feel because your brain is getting plenty of oxygen. Take your time, breathe in a dozen of long deep breathes before you begin. At the end of each sentence, take a deep soothing breath. When giving out long sentences, you can breathe at the end of each phrase. Remember to breathe even if you do not need to. You will feel relaxed and thus you can deliver you speech better.
Fifth, relax before you arrive at the venue of your speech. Take a cup of coffee or herbal tea. Think about other things, preferably happy things, for a while. Try to be as calm as possible. You can go for a stroll or a short walk in order to ease the tension. Think about funny moments in order to lessen your nervousness.
Just follow these basic reminders in order for you to conquer your fear of speaking. Remember that you are not alone. Most people are afraid of giving out public speeches. It is the manner of preparation in fully understanding the subject matter that matters.
